High, Low, Buffalo

When our kids were little, our family started a dinnertime tradition where we would go around the table and have each person share about their day by saying a “high” a “low” and a “buffalo”. Not sure where or when we picked up the “buffalo” - maybe it was just because we live in Oklahoma- but just like a real live buffalo would stick out in the middle of most circumstances, when you shared about a “buffalo”, it represented something about your day that was odd, interesting, or out of the ordinary.

And while all of this family mealtime sharing sounds  ideallic, the real life version was highly imperfect, complete with toddlers screaming, kids trying to talk over each other or a cup of milk being spilled in the middle of the table. As our kids grew up, the tradition remained, and now with only two teenagers remaining at home, we are still high-ing, low-ing, and buffalo-ing our way through mealtimes.  We still have to remind them to not talk over each other, but it has been a hot minute since someone spilled their milk…. For all of you who sit around your dinner tables similarly engaging your families, you know that the whoooole point of these sharing points is to bring about communication and foster connection with your people!

Perfect? No.

Worth it? Always.

As part of this blog, I will be bringing you something called “Fullness Fridays”. These shorter weekly posts will be like mealtime moments - sharing a high, low, and buffalo of our weeks as we go on this journey into fundraising and eventually into doing missions in Japan itself. Thankfully Jesus already knows all the joyful, fun, crazy, wild, hard, challenging, odd, wacky, embarrassing, and heart-rending moments that lie ahead (Det 31:8) - no surprises for Him, but plenty for us and for you too. As a response to these Fullness Fridays, you are always invited to sit at the table and share your own “high, low, and buffalo” moments back with us!
